Dynamic characteristics and improved MPPT control of PV generator

Houda BRAHMI, Rachid DHIFAOUI

Frontiers in Energy 2013, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 342-350 doi: 10.1007/s11708-013-0242-1

Abstract: This paper presents a mathematical model of photovoltaic (PV) module and gives a strategy to calculate online the maximum power point (MPP). The variation of series and shunt resistor are taken into account in the model and are dynamically identified using the Newton-Raphson algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified by laboratory experiments obtained by implementing the model on the dSPACE DS1104 board.

subject to fuzzy operation time constraints: declarative modeling approach A preliminary version

Izabela NIELSEN,Robert WÓJCIK,Grzegorz BOCEWICZ,Zbigniew BANASZAK

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2016, Volume 17, Issue 4,   Pages 338-347 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1500359

Abstract: We present an extension of the resource-constrained multi-product scheduling problem for an automated guided vehicle (AGV) served flow shop, where multiple material handling transport modes provide movement of work pieces between machining centers in the multimodal transportation network (MTN). The multimodal processes behind the multi-product production flow executed in an MTN can be seen as processes realized by using various local periodically functioning processes. The considered network of repetitively acting local transportation modes encompassing MTN’s structure provides a framework for multimodal processes scheduling treated in terms of optimization of the AGVs fleet scheduling problem subject to fuzzy operation time constraints. In the considered case, both production takt and operation execution time are described by imprecise data. The aim of the paper is to present a constraint propagation (CP) driven approach to multi-robot task allocation providing a prompt service to a set of routine queries stated in both direct and reverse way. Illustrative examples taking into account an uncertain specification of robots and workers operation time are provided.

Innovative hybrid reinforcement constituting conventional longitudinal steel and FRP stirrups for improved

Mostafa FAKHARIFAR,Ahmad DALVAND,Mohammad K. SHARBATDAR,Genda CHEN,Lesley SNEED

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 44-62 doi: 10.1007/s11709-015-0295-9

Abstract: The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement is becoming increasingly attractive in construction of new structures. However, the inherent linear elastic behavior of FRP materials up to rupture is considered as a major drawback under seismic attacks when significant material inelasticity is required to dissipate the input energy through hysteretic cycles. Besides, cost considerations, including FRP material and construction of pre-fabricated FRP configurations, especially for stirrups, and probable damage to epoxy coated fibers when transported to the field are noticeable issues. The current research has proposed a novel economical hybrid reinforcement scheme for the next generation of infrastructures implementing on-site fabricated FRP stirrups comprised of FRP sheets. The hybrid reinforcement consists of conventional longitudinal steel reinforcement and FRP stirrups. The key feature of the proposed hybrid reinforcement is the enhanced strength and ductility owing to the considerable confining pressure provided by the FRP stirrups to the longitudinal steel reinforcement and core concrete. Reinforced concrete beam specimens and beam-column joint specimens were tested implementing the proposed hybrid reinforcement. The proposed hybrid reinforcement, when compared with conventional steel stirrups, is found to have higher strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation. Design methods, structural behavior, and applicability of the proposed hybrid reinforcement are discussed in detail in this paper.

SARS-CoV-2 vaccine research and immunization strategies for improved control of the COVID-19 pandemic

Frontiers of Medicine 2022, Volume 16, Issue 2,   Pages 185-195 doi: 10.1007/s11684-021-0913-y

Abstract: The record speed at which Chinese scientists identified severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and shared its genomic sequence with the world, has greatly facilitated the development of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) diagnostics, drugs, and vaccines. It is unprecedented in pandemic control history to develop a dozen successful vaccines in the first year and to immunize over half of the global population in the second year, due to the efforts of the scientific community, biopharmaceutical industry, and regulatory agencies worldwide. The challenges are both great and multidimensional due to the rapid emergence of virus variants and waning of vaccine immunity. Vaccination strategies need to adapt to these challenges to keep population immunity above the herd immunity threshold, by increasing vaccine coverage, especially for older adults and young people, and providing timely booster doses with homologous or heterologous vaccine boosts. Further research should be undertaken to develop more effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 variants and to understand the best prime-boost vaccine combinations and immunization strategies to provide sufficient and sustainable immune protection against COVID-19.
